about the railway and the
wagon way before that. Learn the history of mining in your own
back yard. View extracts from some of the school log books from
the area, schools like the Lambton School in Houghton. There are
even photos in the gallery, showing the shipyards of Sunderland,
once known as the biggest shipbuilding town in the world.
All this in the County of Durham - well it was before Tyne and
Wear came about. Visit a former category "d" village
- remember them?
Visit the colliery villages of the area including the following
:
New Herrington, Newbottle; Houghton-Le-Spring; New Lambton; Penshaw,
Biddick; Shiney Row;
West Rainton; Hetton-Le-Hole; Easington Lane; Philadelphia. There
is a short history on each of them. There is also a short feature
on the old town of Sunderland. Read the school log books from the
1800's including New Herrington, Penshaw, Colliery Row schools
and many more. Also included is a short history of Newbottle Colliery
and the Rainton railway.
There is a database recording miner's bonds, pay lists (Herrington
colliery 1898), Houghton workhouse inmates etc, available only
to members (free membership) also available is a members
