Working the five quarter seam at the depth of 98 fathoms, the coal is eight feet and six inches thick the output is 700 tons daily, employing 660 men and boys in 1894

Wednesday 30th August 1895

All the pitmen and boys both underground and bank, with the exception of the brakemen, have got their notices. The pit is to be stopped for alterations to the shaft, bigger cages, and making a dis-appropriate from the 5/4 seam to the maudlin on Saturday.

Saturday 19th January 1895

175 men and boys got their notices, because of alterations to the engine plane.

June 27th 1896

The Earl of Durham's collieries changed hands.

December 8th 1918

William Kirtley  Aged 55 years died in the Sunderland Royal Infirmary

Cause of death: shock from extensive scalds to body and limbs through the accidental bursting of a steam pipe while he was at work on 6th December 1918 at Dorothea Pit, Philadelphia

William lived in 50 George Street West, New Herrington and was a  Boiler Attendant at Dorothea Pit, Philadelphia. A inquest  was held 10th December 1918.   William's G Grandson would like any information on this incident can anyone help.
