Newbottle wagon way build by John Neasham from the Newbottle Collieries to the river Wear via Hasting Hill

1815

·      Dr Clancy of Sunderland invented the safety lamp and used it at Herrington Mill pit.

·      2nd June - explosion at Success pit -57 lives lost.

·      A loco boiler explosion at Philadelphia 18 killed 50 others severely scalded.

1816

·      First coal drawn from the Dorothea colliery

·      Nicholson’s and Plain pit Chilton Moor opened

·      Explosion at Plain pit 27 lost

1819

·      August 15 t h   John King hung for the murder of James Hamilton in a cabin at the colliery staithes Newbottle

1820

·      Dec - Hetton Lyons colliery is sunk

1821

·      Hetton staithes railway via Copt hill and Warden Law opened

1822

·      March 18th  Henry Anderson a pitman hung, for rape on Sarah Armstrong at Old Pensher 

1823

·      Houghton colliery sunk finished 1827

·      Explosion at Plain pit 53 lives lost men and boys

·      Erection of work house William Street

·      Explosion at the Dolley 11 lives lost

·      Eppleton colliery sunk (Hutton seam) finished 1937

1828

·      Explosion at Houghton   colliery 7 lives lost

1831

·      26th Oct to April 1832 Cholera in Sunderland and surrounding area

1832

·      Explosion at Philadelphia Colliery 12 killed 8 were workmen and 4 members of the Selton family including 1 adult and 3 children

1834

·      Gas works in Houghton opened

1836

·      Explosion at Hetton colliery 20 lives lost

1838

·      Victoria Bridge build at Pensher is opened

1844

·      Pensher Monument foundation stone laid

1850

·      Explosion at Houghton colliery 26 lives lost

1853

·      Cholera in Houghton

·      Pensher to Sunderland passenger line opened.

1860

·      Explosion Hetton colliery 22 lives lost

1863

·      New Herrington School build by St Cuthbert’s Church

·      Opening of Lambton School Newbottle

·     First miner's gala held on 12th August in Durham

1872

·      February 17th abolition of the yearly miner's bond

·      New Herrington colliery sunk

1885

·      Explosion at Houghton colliery 12 lives lost

·      J Wilson (Houghton Le Spring) first elected member of parliament from D.M.A

 

1887

·      Rainton to Seaham railway opened

1902

·      Infants department opened Herrington school and then renamed the New Herrington Board School
