My Marras (The website now in a book). A good read for those who do not have access to a computer, or senior people who are scattered far and wide, but still want to know exactly what that "Young man is putting together on the area." Very well received. Good idea to put in printed medium. Just wanted to say really pleased with it, and what a good idea. We now look forward to the availability of 'The Miners Bond'. History was not all about Kings and Battles, and this site tells the peoples' history so very well and it is much appreciated. Thank You.

Hi there, I have just found this site and was told that there was a Band whose Band Master was called Mr, CALVESBERT. Does anyone know whether this Mr Calvesbert is called James? Does anyone know if his Son, Charles CALVESBERT is also in the Band and which one he is please? Charles was a very talented musician (according to his daughter Audrey) and did play in a band in Redcar every Sunday when he was living in Grangetown. She told me he played the Saxophone and trombone among other instruments. Great site, good to see the pit villages here and learn about them all. I had a SADLER who was born in Shiny Row in the late 1800's. Elizabeth SADLER was the daughter of John and Elizabeth SADLER nee GAMBLE who lived in Osmotherly. Elizabeth the elder was John's second wife. Many thanks. Val

Wonderful site. My dad Gordon Cummings from Newbottle worked at Houghton Colliery until 1963 when we moved to Staffordshire (as did so many miners seeking work), I was 9 at the time and went to Paddock Stile School. His family came from Herrington, he had a brother named Allen and a sisters named Ethel and May, there were more but I dont know there names. We lived in 7 Church Street in Newbottle and I remember them saying they also lived in Success, possiblt South View or Railway Cottages but I cant be certain. My Mam was called Winifred, sadly both passed away now. Dad was a keen fisherman and was in an angling club. If anyone knew my family I would love to hear from them. Even if no one recalls our family, I still get great pleasure from exploring this wonderful site.

Hi, sorry about the previous posting. I am researching my Dad's family from Ferryhill. His name was George Cox, and he was born on January 9th, 1925 at 5 Owens Street in Ferryhill. His Dad, John Thomas Cox worked at the Mainsforth Colliery. When he was young, his family moved to a "pit house" right on the corner beside a pub in Ferryhill Station. He emigrated to Canada in 1963. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dear Derek
I did not know you were brother to Christine/Christopher. I started school with them and went on to Success Road until we all left in the late sixties. Christine and I were friends with Dorothy Ferris, Evelyn Garrett, Anne Irving etc.
Please remember me to them and tell Christine I was asking after her. I last saw her sometime during the late nineteen eighties when she was over Washington drinking with another good friend of ours, Renne Clasper.
As for Thomas Robinson, well, he will remember me and my sister. We were at the same venue for Christmas lunch December 2002 and she went over to talk to him. He works for ETEC at Hendon if I recall.
Oh yes, I know Thomas Robindson. He will no doubt remember me as the girl who bit him when he sat outside my house whilst sitting on his bike, I bit his arm!!! But only after he threw a roof tile at me. I was the one who was made to go and apolgise to him. I have never forgotten that incident to this day. Dreadful child I was!!
As for not remembering Billy Bilton's name, I really should have, but as I say, the memory can play tricks on you. Mr Bilton was the man we all sent for whatever emergency we had. He even rescued my aunt when she went to the outside toilet and found a huge rat looking back at her from the toilet. Mr Bilton flushed it out, but to this day I still cannot flush a toilet without thinking of that incident.
Ahh, those were the days. I think of them with great fondness.
I still believe they were the best days of my life, before we move to Fletcher Crescent then on to Penshaw. It was all traumatic for me. I was a whole nine or ten at the time!!!
And yes, I woul still love anyone who reads this to contact me, just for old times sake.
Thank you
Sandra Hamilton

I came upon the website by accident while trying to find out about former pupils at New Herrington School. I lived at 23 Railway Terrace from 1954-1967. At one time I could name practically every family in Railway Terrace. Mr&Mrs Mourn, Carol Jackson, who lived in the Ten Houses, Alison Furneval,Dorothy Ferris, Mr&Mrs Craig & daughter Joanne,Thomas&Margaret Robinson, Mr&Mrs Bedlington who owned a very "posh" car and woe betide any of us kids who touched it! They always kept their front gate shut, I suppose to kep us kids from playing knocky-nine-doors! What little horrors we must have been!! Mr Cranmer who was the first aider at the pit and everyone went to for minor ailments. He and his wife were a lovely couple. We Hamilton kids loved doing Mrs Cranmer's shopping for her as we always got a bag of fruit and some biscuits for our trouble. She was told not to give us money by our mam, but very often did.
We also went to New Herrintgon Methodist Sunday School without fail. I sill have two books I got for regular attendance.
I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me of my family via e-mail.

I very interesting web site, my visit is in connection with my great-grand father's half- sister and her husband. Margaret Sarah Jane Chivers-Hayes and Samuel Hayes, who moved there with their family in or about 1877, they had a number of children born in Midsomer Norton, Somerset.
Albert,Lily.Rosina and Joseph, and after the move north, John and Samuel and James born in West Herrington. There was a connection with Edwin Smith born about 1900. My great-great grand mother Martha Gregory-Chivers was living with them in 16 Bridge Row in 1901, she died a couple of years later. Any information please?

I really like this site, I was so pleased when I found it a little while ago, it helped me summon the resolve to visit where my Mam and her tribe came from (which I did, I even climbed Penshaw Monument Hill, Easter Sunday 2001). My Aunts could identify a lot of things that the webmaster had mentioned on the site - and awoke some old memories (Egg Rolling, Farmer Taylor, Herrington Pit, Shiney,Fatfield, not forgetting the "Tiv") They always ask what the "Young Man has put on his site now". They are in wonderment that the "young man" mentioned Rickaby's store and the horse (Mk1V model?). I shall now have to try and relate Rebecca Reays' wonderful poem. This is a lovely and much appreciated site.
