My wifes gg Grandfather was Charles Frederick Robinson (wife Sarah ). In 1881 census he was living at 51 Quarry Row, Newbottle/Houghton Le Spring, Durham. as a coal agent (miner) Does this house still exist? Does anyone have any info on this Robinson family? I have found reference to other Robinsons on your site but it was probably a common mame. Any help would be appreciated. Colin Ashland, Oregon, USA.

Interesting site - I'll be back for another look. I believe my ancestors came from the Sunderland area - family now based down in Kent. My grandfather was also a coppersmith. Before that his father and gf were farriers/blacksmiths. Would like to know if there are any Herringtons still up North!

Really interesting site about pit life in the North East. I am from a pit village in North Derbyshire and referred to the 'rows' as tops and bottoms. The days I remember as a boy have gone forever but the memories will always be there. I played in the same streets as my dad and his dad before him. Now it's just waste land but if you listen very carefully the sound of times past is sometimes carried by the wind! Well done. We must never forget.

Having been invited by the webmaster to visit this site, it is a matter of common courtesy to accept the kind invitation. I was invited because of my interest in a disaster which occurred at Burradon Colliery, Northumberland, in 1860, where my ancestors lost 7 of their families. Having done extensive research on my family history, from the 18th Century onwards, virtually every male ancestor I have was a miner, in pits all over Durham and Northumberland. Under 'Whats New' on this site, the article 'Helping Others', produced a list of all men from the local collieies around Newbottle, who donated cash to ease the suffering of the families of those killed in that tragedy. It does show the solidarity amongst the miners of those days and the grief felt for their fellow workers, who they never knew, or never met. I love these 'local history' websites and will visit again. Thank you very much for letting me know about it. Bill Henderson

Hi there! Looks like you've made a good start to your site. Congrats! I will visit from time to time to check on any up-dates, so beware!! I haven't done anything about it yet, as it's 3-00 PM, and I keep getting chucked offline. That's just to do with my ISP. When I think I can stay on longer, I will do something about the link soon though! Take care, johnx

This is going to be an interesting site. My Mam's family lived around the area, at 24 Fenton Terrace for many years. I look forward to visiting this site again. Must tell my Aunty - even "their Co-op" is mentioned. The Green?- my Mam's tribe played on there until they moved to Shiney Row in the 30's - and I do mean "tribe"!
